Building on the success of the Market Street Prototyping Festival held last spring, the Central Market Showcase will bring back a collection of projects for one month that tests ideas for improving San Francisco’s main thoroughfare.

Believing that artists and designers can be provocative agents in helping us to reimagine our cities, the Studio for Urban Projects has created Outpost as a way of helping us to claim Market Street in this crucial moment. It will be a place to enjoy a meal, talk with your neighbors, relax and give our city planners feedback that will shape the future of Market Street.

Outpost Schedule

  • Outpost: Week 1
    September 30, 2015
The day’s events will look at how can we redefine the social life of the sidewalk.
  • Outpost: Week 2
    October 6-7, 2015
The week’s events will look at how the street can provide a space for dialogue about our communal needs. All events curated by the Studio for Urban Projects are on Wednesdays between 12:00-9:00pm.
  • Outpost: Week 3
    October 13-17, 2015
The week’s events will look at how we can bring nature to the city. All events curated by the Studio for Urban Projects are on Wednesdays between 12:00-9:00pm.
  • Outpost: Week 4
    October 19-22, 2015
The week’s events will look at how we can reclaim the streets for people, creating a transit model that prioritizes safe biking and walking. All events curated by the Studio for Urban Projects are on Wednesdays between 12:00-9:00pm.

Performing as both installation and event, Outpost will pilot four weeks of programming. Over the month it will be a venue for workshops, lunch-time discussions, after-school programs, and film screenings. Housed in a simple prefabricated structure that is inspired by the space frame systems of the 1960s, Outpost is designed to be easily fabricated, modified, and replicated.
