Bay Area Doctors Help Oakland Zoo’s Sick Hyena for Free
Thanks to NBC Bay Area for the wonderful story on how local doctors helped save Oakland Zoo’s hyena at no cost.
Tusker, the zoo’s spotted hyena, has been sick lately. As the Oakland Zoo has been struggling financially, they were grateful to have SAGE Veterinary Centers & AnimalScan Advanced Veterinary Imaging, whose Redwood City location offered the Zoo an MRI procedure free of charge – a procedure that would normally cost thousands of dollars.
Tusker was transported to the Redwood City facility for a thorough examination. As of writing, we are awaiting test results and the initial prognosis is good. Keep posted on Tusker’s condition via Oakland Zoo’s Facebook page.
When the Oakland Zoo, which has been burdened by financial troubles amid the coronavirus pandemic, needed help, local doctors came to the rescue — for free. https://t.co/6mjzTejir4

Hi, hyena!
Here’s how Tusker the hyena greets fellow hyenas and Savanna neighbors at the Zoo.
Spotted Hyena calls are highly social and each hyena has a unique call. Vocalizations like this allow them to stay connected to their clan.
