Thanks to the Oakland”me Zoo for rescuing an injured pelican from Lake Merritt.
Locals noticed an injured pelican at the lake, and staff from the Oakland Zoo were able to capture the pelican and bring her back to their veterinary hospital. The pelican, which they named Merritt, had a large fishhook lodged in her throat and a fishing line tangled around its neck and bill.
The vets were able to remove the fishhook and line, feed her some fish and administer rehydrating fluids. Unfortunately, she has a torn beak and will need to recover a bit more before she can be treated. She’ll remain under the care of Oakland Zoo, and they’ll be giving updates on her wellbeing on their Facebook page.
