Outdoor Street Dining Coming Next to 18th St. in The Castro?
Thanks to KTVU for letting us know that it’s expected that the city this week will approve a request by the Castro Merchants Association for two blocks on 18th Street in the Castro to be closed to vehicle traffic and open for outdoor dining.
SFMTA is expected to approve the plan this week. The permit would run through the end of the year, and the street closure could start as soon as Friday, August 7, 2020.
Although vehicle traffic will be prohibited, it is expected that there will be a 14-foot lane reserved exclusively for emergency vehicles.
Which Streets Will Be Closed?
On 18th Street between Castro and Hartford Streets, the north side traffic lane and adjacent sidewalk will be separated by barriers and used for businesses there to have “curbside” and takeout sales, as well as for restaurants and bars outdoor table service.
On 18th Street between Castro and Collingwood Streets, the south side traffic lane and adjacent sidewalk will be separated by barriers and used for businesses there to have “curbside” and takeout sales, as well as for restaurants and bars outdoor table service. The City Parking Lot in this block (behind Walgreens) will be closed, while this block is closed to vehicles.
When Will These 2 Blocks On 18th St. Be Closed?
KTVU reports that the closures will be 1-10pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday. (Please note that earlier proposals mentioned a closure of streets from 2-9pm)
