SamTrans Now Offers Free Transfers for 2020
To help inform riders about the agency’s new free transfer policy which just began on 1/1/20, SamTrans is holding a series of outreach events. SamTrans staff will be providing riders with free Clipper cards (which would normally cost $3 without autoload) and will help explain how the new policy will affect their use of the system.

New Free Transfer Policy for 2020
The new transfer policy came about as part of a series of fare changes that went into effect with the New Year. Going forward, there will be no charge for transferring between local SamTrans routes within a two-hour window when using Clipper or the SamTrans Mobile app.
Fare Changes for 2020 – Local Day Passes Drop $1
Riders paying cash can purchase a Day Pass, which will now cost $4.50 for adults and $2.20 for youth and Eligible Discount riders, the price of two one-way trips.
The fare changes approved by the SamTrans Board of Directors will go into effect on January 1, 2020.
An Adult one way fare will remain at $2.25, while the cost of the Local Day Pass will be $1 less, going from $5.50 to $4.50. Eligible Discount and Youth One-way ride will remain at $1.10 and the Local Day Pass will cost $2.
Routes 292, 397 and 398 will no longer have an additional charge for riders departing from San Francisco. Adult riders on express routes will now pay a one-way Express fare of $4.50.
SamTrans will also no longer sell bulk metal tokens at a discounted rate and is replacing them with paper ones. Riders can still use metal tokens they have already purchased until the end of 2020.

SamTrans staff will be providing riders with free Clipper cards (which would normally cost $3 without autoload) and will help explain how the new policy will affect their use of the system. SamTrans staff will be at the following locations:
- Serramonte Center, Daly City – Monday, January 6, 4-6 p.m.
- San Bruno BART, San Bruno – Tuesday, January 7, 9-11 a.m.
- Linda Mar Park & Ride, Pacifica – Tuesday, January 7, 4-6 p.m.
- Palo Alto Transit Center, Palo Alto – Thursday, January 9, 7-9 a.m.
- Redwood City Transit Center – Thursday, January 9, 4-6 p.m.
