Thank you ABC7 for letting us know that Santa Clara County is the first in the state to declare Juneteenth a paid public holiday.

Juneteenth also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, or Emancipation Day is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States.

September 22, 2020, after 39 years of celebrating Juneteenth, Santa Clara County made history as the first in California to declare June 19 as an official paid county holiday. Declaring Juneteenth a holiday is the community’s first step in honoring their commitment to equity and social justice.

With the new addition of Juneteenth, it brings the county’s official count of public holidays to 13.
