Here’s Where All 33 of SF’s Speed Cameras Will Be

Speed “safety cameras” are coming to San Francisco in March 2025

San Francisco is set to make history as the first city in California to roll out speed safety cameras, a new tool aimed at reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities. Starting in March 2025, up to 33 locations across the city will be equipped with cameras to catch speeding vehicles and enforce safer driving.

The cameras will be installed on streets where speeding has been a persistent issue, particularly near schools, parks, senior centers, and community spaces. They will automatically photograph the rear license plates of vehicles traveling 11 MPH or more over the speed limit, with citations sent to the registered owners. For the first 60 days, drivers caught speeding will receive warnings, after which fines will be issued based on the severity of the violation.

This program is part of San Francisco’s broader effort to make streets safer for everyone—whether walking, biking, or driving. Speed is the leading cause of severe and fatal collisions in the city, and officials hope that automated enforcement will encourage drivers to slow down and reduce dangerous crashes.

A public awareness campaign is already underway, featuring billboards, bus shelter ads, and digital media to educate residents about the upcoming changes. The city has also partnered with artist Ahmad Walker to create an animated video highlighting the community benefits of speed safety cameras.

As one of six California cities approved to pilot this program under AB 645, San Francisco is taking the lead in using technology to improve street safety. City officials believe these cameras will be a game-changer in protecting residents and making roadways safer for everyone.

Speed safety cameras will begin operation in March 2025. Find the map of the speed camera locations:
