SF is No Longer the Priciest Place to Rent in USA (Barely)
San Francisco just got demoted.
Thanks to KRON4 for sharing the news that San Francisco is no longer the most expensive city for rent in the United States.
According to data from the August 2021 Zumper report, New York just edged out San Francisco to take the number 1 spot with the median one-bedroom rent of $2,810. San Francisco’s median is $2,800.
Zumper’s noted that this is the first time that San Francisco has not taken the title of the most expensive city to rent in since they started tracking rental data in 2014.
Boston takes the title for the third most expensive city with a median rent of $2,300, followed by San Jose in 4th at $2,200 and Oakland in 7th at $2,000.
Zumper noted although the pandemic lockdowns caused renters to move out of San Francisco and New York City, people have returned to New York City as the city opened back up. However, as many Bay Area tech companies have continued to allow its workers to work-from-home, many have chosen to not return to San Francisco.
