SF’s New $4.1 Million Treehouse-Inspired Playground
Families in San Francisco’s Sunset District have a brand new playground to check out with the reopening of Stern Grove Playground.
Set among the grove’s tall trees just off Sloat Boulevard, the renovated play space has been redesigned with a woodland theme. The new features include tree-like towers, climbing nets, log structures, swings, and an added nature exploration zone where kids can dig into unstructured play.
The $4.1 million project also brought in new surfacing, updated pathways, and refreshed landscaping. The design was shaped with community input to better connect the playground to its natural surroundings.
This renovation is part of Let’sPlaySF!, a partnership working to update 13 playgrounds across the city. With Stern Grove complete, 12 of the 13 projects are now finished.
Funding for the playground came from a mix of public and private support, including contributions from the Hellman Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, the Koret Foundation, San Franciscans for Sports and Recreation, the Lisa and John Pritzker Family Fund, Jackie and Joby Pritzker, and others.
The result is a neighborhood playground that blends in with Stern Grove’s natural setting and gives kids space to climb, explore, and play outdoors.
