SF’s Jackson Park is Getting a $40 Million Makeover
San Francisco’s Jackson Park is getting a makeover.
A new playground, sports viewing areas, community learning gardens and an outdoor ball court are among the features included in the Jackson Park concept design approved Thursday by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission.
The $40 million renovation of the 4.4 acre park in Potrero Hill also includes:
- Creation of a dog run, as well as more green space for park-goers.
- Moving the existing clubhouse from the southeast corner of the park to mid-block along Carolina Street, expanding the building by an additional 4,700 square feet, and renovating the space to include an updated and expanded kitchen, remodeled restrooms, and an improved stage. The addition to the clubhouse will allow for more programming to meet demand.
- Repositioning the currently overlapping ballfields to allow simultaneous games while improving safety and access.
Construction is estimated to begin in mid-2026 with completion in 2028. The project is a private-public partnership between San Francisco Rec and Park and the Friends of Jackson Park (FoJP).
Funding will include approximately $12 million in private donations–$2.8 of which has been raised. It also includes $12.6 million in combined development impact fees and $10 million in 2020 San Francisco Health and Recovery Bond funding. The renovation also includes approximately $5 million from Rec and Park’s general fund.
Rec and Park and FoJP have been working on the park’s redesign since 2014. The multi-year community outreach included presentations to neighborhood groups, seniors, youth and merchants. The project is supported by Senator Scott Wiener, Assemblymember Matt Haney, Supervisor Shamann Walton, and a wide range of neighborhood organizations and businesses.
“Jackson Park has been a precious neighborhood resource since 1912 and we want to ensure it will continue to serve the community for generations,” said San Francisco Recreation and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg. “This project reinvigorates everything we love about Jackson Park while making it a more functional, accessible, and beautiful part of urban life.”
“After eight years of diligent advocacy, FoJP and the community of Jackson Park users are thrilled to have received unanimous approval from the Rec and Park Commission,” said Jude Deckenbach of Friends of Jackson Park. “This is a major step in delivering a citywide-serving park to a growing neighborhood. We look forward to working with the Department to raise the funds necessary to make our dream park a reality.”
