SF’s Sunset Dunes Park Creates New Zones for Bikes and Families
San Francisco’s newest park, Sunset Dunes, has only been open since April but is already getting a safety and family-friendly upgrade after a string of bike and scooter accidents, including one involving a 4-year-old.
The two-mile park will be split into two zones:
- Park Zone (west side): Calm, family-friendly space for walking, yoga, play, picnics, and community events. Non-motorized bikes or scooters are welcome if ridden by children.
- Multi-Use Zone (east side): Shared space for cyclists, runners, walkers, scooters, and e-bikes. Everyone should keep to the right for smoother travel, and pedestrians always have the right of way at crosswalks.
Temporary signs on light poles and A-frames will go up next week with messages like “Ride Slow, Say Hello.” Pavement stencils at intersections will mark “Yield,” “Shared Pathway,” and “Look.” SFMTA expects stencil work to be done in four to six weeks, with park rangers on-site to answer questions.
The San Francisco Police Department will do spot enforcement at Sunset Dunes and JFK Promenade to ensure e-bikes and scooters are used responsibly. Future improvements include adding more Park Zone amenities, ongoing community outreach, and monitoring entrances at Lincoln, Judah, and Noriega. Officials are also considering speed limits for bikes and scooters.
