Watch an Old BART Train Get Demolished to Classical Music
To make room for more of the new Fleet of the Future train cars, BART is ramping up the retirement of old train cars, which are being sustainably recycled.
The majority of old cars will be recycled. Parts are stripped, the shell is shredded, and the metal is melted down for reuse in other products.

Do have an idea how you’d like to repurpose an old BART car?
The general public has a chance to extend the lives of decommissioned train cars in creative and innovative ways. Some initial expressions of interest that have been received include proposals to use old BART cars as museum exhibits, coffee shops, and independent artworks.
BART is doing outreach to spread the word about how to make a successful proposal. The formal call for proposals will be in January 2021.
