Nik Wallenda, a seventh generation member of the legendary “Great Wallendas” circus family, is scheduled to kick off the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s Spring Break with two jaw-dropping stunts on April 16, 2011.
- For his first stunt, Nik Wallenda will walk on top of the Boardwalk’s spinning Ferris Wheel beginning at noon.
- Wallenda’s second stunt at 5pm is a white-knuckled motorcycle ride up a wire from the beach to the top of the 125-foot Double Shot tower ride, and back. Nik’s wife Erendira, of the famous Flying Vasquez family of trapeze artists, will hang from a trapeze under the motorcycle during the hair-raising ride.
About The Great Wallendas
A member of the famous Wallenda family hasn’t performed at the Boardwalk since the 1970s. Nik Wallenda’s great grandfather, high wire artist Karl Wallenda, performed at the Boardwalk in 1975, three years before he died in a tragic accident while performing in Puerto Rico. In 1976, Stephan Wallenda walked the Boardwalk’s Skyglider cable with Steve “Unique” McPeak, leaving behind dramatic photographs of the event. This will be Nik Wallendas first time performing at the Boardwalk. In August 2010, Nik set a Guinness World Record for Highest Tightrope Crossing by a Bicycle when he rode across a wire suspended 260 feet in the air at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. He holds a second World Record for Longest Tightrope Crossing by Bicycle for a 235-foot wire ride in 2008.
