Dark Folk: A genre of music that combines traditional folk music with elements of dark, often gothic, themes
As spooky season descends upon the land, join EG Phillips @duckswithpants as he kicks of his residency at Bazaar Cafe with #songwriters Melinda Kausek @melindakbaile and JJ Schultz @jjschultz for a night of moody (but inevitably quirky) live acoustic music at this San Francisco hidden gem on Friday Sept 13th (eek!)
Melinda Kausek
Melinda Kausek has been singing and making up songs for as long as she can remember. Her music dances between folk and pop with a bluesy twist. Dreamy, catchy melodies float over the haunting twang of her banjolele and moody guitar stylings, while her lyrics explore the light and dark sides of life and love, magic and freedom. If you like Cat Power, Haley Heynderickx, or The Wild Reeds, check out her music on all streaming platforms!

JJ Schultz
Hailing from the Wisconsin Northwoods, JJ Schultz captures the lonesome middle-America landscape with the wry clarity of Nebraska era Springsteen. Schultz’s wavering vibrato captures the snap shots of everyday people surviving the life of rural America. The dusty barrooms, the front porch steps and farmer’s fields are images delivered with a subtle passion that’s balanced between sparse guitar picking and a poignant vocal delivery that is as distinctive as Jay Farrar and Townes Van Zandt.

E.G. Phillips
E.G. Phillips is a San Francisco based songwriter who creates lyric driven songs with his own special blend of whimsy and cinematic imagery which he uses to give a wry take on dealing with the longings of the heart and the madness of existence. You could call his music jazz-infused progressive folk — “Bob Dylan with flatted fifths” or “lounge music that falls somewhere between Tom Waits and They Might Be Giants.”

In possession of a degree in Geography, E.G. is a tech industry refugee and comes from a country called the Midwest. His favorites include the Beatles and the Kinks as well as Duke Ellington…and that crowd. When it comes to his stage presence, there’s a touch of satirist Tom Lehrer in the mix. As for the inspiration for his lyrics, he readily admits an unusually outsized influence by long running British sci-fi show “Doctor Who.”
”Ducks With Pants” is the name of his fake band.
