In anticipation of its February 20-22 YBCA Theater premiere of a new production of Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, award-winning contemporary opera company Opera Parallele will present a special free public event featuring composer Jake Heggie, Sister Helen Prejean (on whose 1993 memoir the opera is based), the Opera Parallèle Artistic Team, and others on Wednesday, January 21, 7-8:30 pm at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco.
Free, but tickets are required to attend.
Selections from the opera and from Heggie’s other works will be performed by esteemed San Francisco singers Frederica von Stade, Catherine Cook, Kristin Clayton, and Nicolle Foland, accompanied by Mr. Heggie at the piano. Mr. Heggie will also accompany Temple Emanu-El’s renowned cantor, Roslyn Barak, in a special performance of Ravel’s “Kaddish.”
The evening will include Sister Helen’s passionate presentation and discussion about the transformation of her famous memoir into film, stage play, and opera.
Leaders from initiatives against the death penalty will take part in a panel discussion.
