On Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., Hayes Valley Farm will host a celebration and work party in honor of the world’s largest secular civic event. Located at the 450 Laguna St. at the intersection of Oak and Laguna Streets, the nearly 2.5 acre site will offer a free Earth Day event with activities for all ages. The celebration will feature live music, food and an ecology-themed painting project.
- A highlight of Earth Day activities will be a hands-on tutorial on DIY potato towers. Vertical structures made from chicken wire, potato towers provide a practical, high-yield way for urban dwellers to grow and harvest potatoes in small spaces.
- Other farm activities will include planting vegetable starts and seeds, site beautification, and sheet mulching, a low-cost, pesticide-free gardening method that uses existing weeds and vegetation to build fertile soil.
About Hayes Valley Farm
Growing in the heart of San Francisco, Hayes Valley Farm is an education and research project with a focus on urban agriculture. The project is founded on an interim-use agreement between Hayes Valley Farm and San Francisco’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development, until the City moves forward with other development plans for the site. Organized by an alliance of urban farmers, educators, and designers, the project is fiscally sponsored by the San Francisco Parks Trust. The farm hosts workshops as well as regular workdays on Thursdays from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., and Sundays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.
