The piano has been 23-year-old’s Emeli Sande‘s instrument and songwriting tool since she was ten and her voice has been remarkable for even longer.
Her love for — and understanding of –– Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell and Lauryn Hill are obvious, loud and proud. The retro-futurist soul-pop songs she’s written for her own debut album are richly melodic, classically powerful.
