Earlier this year, in April, the City and County of San Francisco added EMPEROR NORTON PLACE as a commemorative name for the 600 block of Commercial — and shortly afterward placed an “Emperor Norton Place” street sign at the northwest corner of Montgomery and Commercial Streets.
THE PUBLIC IS INVITED to: A FREE dedication and celebration of the naming…
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 17th
1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
FORMAL DEDICATION IS AT 1–1:30 P.M. — Northwest corner of Montgomery & Commercial Streets
In recent years, September 17th — the anniversary of Joshua Norton’s original Proclamation declaring himself Emperor on 17 September 1859 — has been celebrated as EMPIRE DAY.
This year, Empire Day marks the 164th anniversary of Emperor Norton’s public reign.
Following the dedication, celebratory events during the afternoon include:
1) Special Sunday opening of the San Francisco Historical Society Museum, at 608 Commercial Street, with:
+ Exhibit of original Norton ephemera — cabinet card photographs; Norton “bonds” signed by the Emperor; etc.
+ Fun educational Norton-focused activities for kids
+ Historical plaque scavenger hunt
+ Docent-led Museum tours
2) Emperor-themed games for all ages hosted by the Emperor Norton Legacy League in Empire Park
