“Empty Without You” Participatory Love Letter Performance Art | San Jose

On Friday, November 6, ICA Live will present a participatory performance by Genevieve Hastings, whose art installations often include constructed environments with “receiving stations” that explore how people engage with personal memories. The artist encourages audience participation through encounters with objects, images, sounds, and scents that stimulate memory response.

For the ICA Live! performance, Hastings will use scent vials to stimulate participants’ sense of smell, and she will read from love letters written during previous projects. (For example, one participant wrote a letter to their younger self and another wrote to a deceased spouse). By engaging visitors’ senses and sentimentality, Hastings encourages participants to write a love letter of their own.
