Event Details

Hailed as “a young quartet with an enviable reputation for elegance, precision and energy,” Esmé Quartet begins their anticipated residency with SF Performances on September 27. As Ensemble-in-Residence for the 2025–26 Saturday Morning Series, the quartet leads four thoughtfully curated programs that illuminate the emotional and structural brilliance of Schubert’s works. The residency opens on September 27 with the dramatic String Quartet in D minor, D. 810, “Death and the Maiden,” followed by the Quartettsatz, D. 703 and the lyrical A minor Quartet, D. 804, “Rosamunde” on October 18. On November 15, they take on the expansive G major Quartet, D. 887, and conclude on December 13 with the monumental String Quintet in C major, D. 956, joined by guest cellist Paul Wiancko. Praised for their warm sound and powerful presence, the Esmé Quartet was formed in 2016 at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany by four musicians who had been friends since their youth. The Quartet has rapidly gained a worldwide reputation as a chamber ensemble of exceptional artistry and achievement.
