Carve San Francisco: Sandcastle Building Contest | Presidio

Come out to see some outrageous sand art at Carve San Francisco, NoCal’s inaugural international sand sculpting competition and ode to sand, surf and beach culture on October 15-20, 2013.

Watch about a dozen teams from around the world to sculpt 225 tons of sand into astounding and intricate works of art over five days.

In addition to watching the sculpting, they’ve set up a “beach” bar in the parking lot, there’s free smart car test drives, free samples from sponsors like Longboard Winery, Findandia Vodka, Kona Brewing, and Dole, rafffles, free yoga classes, surf films, live surf art, Off the Grid food trucks and more.

2013 Carve San Francisco
October 15-20, 2013
Sports Basement Parking Lot, 610 Old Mason St, SF
FREE to watch

Featured sculptors and artists include Lawrence Noble, Chairman of Academy of Art University’s Sculpture Department and famous for creating the ‘Yoda Fountain’ for George Lucas in the Presidio. Carve also showcases sand artists featured on The Travel Channel’s ‘The Sand Masters.’

These sculptures are durable – it’s a special sand mixed with a little clay and we’re told won’t come down even if it were to rain.

Event is free, but it costs $1 if you’d like to vote for your favorite sculpture (money goes to non-profit)

At the end of the festival, all the sand used in the sculptures (about $6,000 worth) will be donated to the Presidio Trust for use in parks, construction and golf course sand traps.
