For the 37th season of Shakespeare in the Park, SF Shakes will present a production of “As You Like It.”
Having produced “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to wide acclaim in 2018, this summer the company turns to a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy “As You Like It”. The show features an original soundtrack of 11 songs – 9 that were scored by celebrated Bay Area composers The Kilbanes and 2 by SF Shakes Resident Artist, Phil Wong.
Audiences of all ages will be delighted by this family-friendly production.
This musical version of “As You Like It” asks the questions “What does it mean to go ‘into the woods’ in our world today? What might it mean in the near future?” Just after Rosalind and Orlando meet and fall for each other, they’re both exiled from the autocratic Court to the Forest of Arden – with Rosalind in disguise as the boy Ganymede. Despite the challenges of life in the woods, they find new friends and allies and fall in love all over again.
Director Rebecca J. Ennals comments, “We chose the musical format partly because this is Shakespeare’s most musical play, with a number of songs already part of the text. We also feel that music can transport us and connect us in ways that words sometimes can’t, and can help make the story more clear for folks hearing Shakespeare’s language for the first time. We frequently hear from our audience “More songs! More music please!” So here it is… ‘As You Like It’!”
Bring your family and friends, a blanket, and a picnic to enjoy professional theater at no charge in a beautiful park setting near you.
