There have been 51 homicides in the city of Oakland in 2021. In 2020, we saw an almost 40% spike since 2012.
COVID-19 exacerbated the pre-existing conditions of poverty and desperation which are the direct result of anti-Blackness and race-based capitalism. The only “solution” our city has offered is the further criminalization of our children, surveillance, violent policing and incarceration.
We need a healing. The kind of healing only Black women can provide. The kind of love only the first givers of life can offer.
An unprecedented amount of these deaths have been Black women and girls.
Join the Black Women Wail Collective as we come together for the second time to mourn our loss, engage in our healing and plan our resistance.
We conjure and manifest an end to Black death and on June 5th, we specifically demand an end to violence agains Black women and girls in the city of Oakland.
Join Black women activists, organizers, advocates and culture workers as we activate healing spaces in East & West Oakland. We begin at Sunrise in Defermery Park (Little Bobby Hutton Park) For 24 hours we will wail, read poetry, perform, scream, plan, plot, plant activate, conjure and ignite peace, wellness and healing
All are welcome to attend but ONLY Black women will be welcome inside of the circle or to speak.
If you would like to talk or submit a recorded piece to be played over the 24 hour ritual, send a 3 minute recording to (510) 239-7056.
