Inward Expanse – Aaron Larget-Caplan, Guitar (SF)

Guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan returns to San Francisco for a solo and electronics concert, ‘Inward Expanse,’ at the Center for New Music, 55 Taylor Street, on Sunday April 3, at 7:30pm. Larget-Caplan explores daily life from a mystical, scientific, and cerebral perspective with electronic and acoustic music for guitar. He includes pieces by living composers from the US, Brazil, and Czech Republic, many of which are California premieres.

‘Steps and Leaps’ by Tom Flaherty, of Pomona College, is a 2019 composition celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the moon landing. Composed in 2020, ‘Carousel,’ by Brooklyn, New York composer Lainie Fefferman, portrays the confusion and worry of daily life and the uncertainty of the future. New England composer Lou Bunk’s 2004 ‘Being and Becoming’ explores a single note in a Zen-like expanse, or maybe a person…or a cup of coffee.

Bonding the new and old, Larget-Caplan will perform one of his groundbreaking John Cage arrangements, ‘Dream’. Written for choreographer Merce Cunningham in 1948, this lyrical hypnotic work probes the simplicity of resonance in a single voice melody. Larget-Caplan’s arrangement was recorded on ‘John. Cage. Guitar.’ issued by Stone Records (UK). Six Strings of the World, the Polish guitar magazine says, “The release of such works [recording and publication] is very important for the development of the modern guitar repertoire. Larget-Caplan has ennobled our instrument.”

‘Inward Expanse’ features six of the over 65 acoustic solos written for his acclaimed New Lullaby Project. This concert includes multiple California premieres and the world premiere of the sixty-ninth piece, by Brazilian composer Antonio Celso Ribeiro. Other composers include Brian Schrober (NYC), Laurie Spiegel (NYC), Anthony R. Green (RI/UK), Štěpán Rak (Czech Republic), and UC Berkeley composer Ken Ueno.

Described as a lullaby-hunter, Larget-Caplan continues to receive compositions from around the world. Some composers approach the lullaby in its functional duty, others explore the moment the two worlds of wake vs. sleep represent, or how our minds slip between and adjust to our dreams as we fall asleep. Though lullabies are often considered music for children, Fanfare magazine wrote about the project’s first album ‘New Lullaby’, “This is not some godawful Classics-for-Baby album.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Classical guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan has premiered over 85 compositions. He directs and curates the New Lullaby Project. His arrangements and recording of the music of John Cage, the first to be sanctioned by the Cage estate, have received international accolades. He has seven solo albums, and the first album of his compositions, ‘honey cadence,’ will be released in April, 2022.
