Event Details

For its inaugural exhibition, Chandran Gallery is pleased to present Faces, Figures, Places and Things., a solo exhibition by San Francisco¬ based artist Richard Colman. Among the expansive body of new work, Colman will be working in the gallery during the weeks leading up to the show on multiple large¬scale paintings and a sprawling floor installation. The exhibition is on view Sept 25 to Nov 06, 2015 with an opening reception on Friday, Sept 25 from 7 – 9:30pm.

Faces, Figures, Places and Things.  is a continuation of Richard Colman’s exploration of color and figurative work. Through deceptively simple forms, these new works explore the hidden language of human communication. The exhibition illuminates Colman’s obsession with the subtleties and intricacies of human behavior. Colman’s work strives to interpret these underlying elements in an attempt to understand the roots or catalysts within given situations.

Known for his kinetic patterns and compositions, these new works take a sharp turn employing bold color blocking and minimalist forms. The works are simultaneously minimal and intricate, where viewers are met with dense washes of color that plot out interconnected labyrinths of faces and figures. The paintings masterfully parallel the artist’s observations of human behavior as nuances of the story emerge through tactical arrangement of the forms and use of space.

The interactions between the figures imply narratives on human sexuality, strategy and societal hierarchy, further intensified by Colman’s vibrant and unexpected color pallette. The communication between the figures are expressed through their positioning that ranges from competing and confrontational, to engaged and passive.
