Fat Chance Belly Dance (FCBD) is a group improvisational style that fuses raqs sharqi (or what Westerners refer to as “belly dance”) and flamenco. It was developed in San Francisco by queer women in the 1980s. Since then, it has become a worldwide phenomenon with dancers in many countries.
This is a folkloric dance style that emphasizes strength, grace, endurance, and synchronizing with fellow dancers. The group dynamic also makes it easy to make new and lasting friendships.
If you’re curious to know what this style of dance looks like, here is a beautiful example of a FCBD dance troupe from Belarus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF-aSM4Bh-8
This is a free beginner class that will go over the very basics of FCBD. No dance experience required. All ages, genders (yes – men do belly dance!), and backgrounds welcome. Please wear comfortable clothing, and of course, you are not required to bare your belly. RSVP required, please follow the posted link to sign up. Hope to dance with you soon!
