Event Details

Often, we hear the stories and feel the pain of the victim’s mother, but rarely do we acknowledge, let alone provide room for fathers to express and heal from the pain they experience. Ferguson Rises: Documentary Screening will provide an opportunity for the community to wrap our arms around these fathers and let them know we are aware of their pain and are here to support them.

As we work to breakdown stereotypes and rewrite the narrative on our Black Fathers, it is important to provide safe spaces for the sharing of feelings and frustrations, as well as healing and discussing topics unique to their struggles and challenges as men and dads. The Ferguson Rises: “Flowers for Fathers’” will be a Healthy Healing event held at the Bayview Opera House……consisting of a healthy space for discussion and healing with food, vendors, music, performances, and fellowship. An afternoon dedicated to giving Flowers to the Fathers of the Bayview/Hunters Point community and dispelling the myth of the absent father in the Black community.

For the first part of the afternoon (1pm-3pm) we will have an outdoor fellowship area that will consist of food, vendors, music, and performances by local artist like Hugh EMC, Fly Benzo, 2Pac Songs , Poet Spoken Word, and Visitors from Youth Speaks. Vendors will be onsite offering information on therapy, meditation, and other healing tools, as well as resources and referrals to supportive services. Michael Brown Sr., father of Michael Brown Jr., will be on hand to share his experience dealing with the shooting death of his son and steps he has taken to deal with his grief and pain.

From 3-5:05pm Patrons will come inside for the screening of the Ferguson Rises (Mike Brown Jr. Documentary), immediately followed by a panel discussion (5:05pm – 6pm). There will be a total of five panelists, consisting of Mike Brown, Sr and four other fathers/men who have had experiences with police shootings and other forms of brutality. This event will jump start the conversation on how we heal from the violence and injustices are communities have suffered at the hands of the police but also begin the dialogue on how we partner with the police to keep our communities safe.
