Event Details

Irene Takahashi-Coker’s portraits are of friends and family who are in the process of self healing. A transformation happens as Irene and her subjects create the portraits. Most are not accustomed to being the focus of an art piece. The vulnerable portraits offer glimpses into each subject’s process of healing. Body image, personal relationships and good health are things everyone struggles with to maintain. These are impacted by the stresses of money and oppressive systems.

To further build connections not only between Irene and her subjects, but for the art viewer as well, each person has offered their words. The portraits will include the subjects own words about their struggle and healing process.

To heal together as a community, communication must be open to realize those relatable similarities that bond and inspire us. This bond will ultimately make us and the community stronger and more empathetic. Along with these graphite portraits are healing fetishes. Inspired by tattoo imagery, hearts both anatomical and sacred, cry and reveal bright flames.
