Free Fleet Week Lecture: Keeping You Safe around the Bay: The Coast Guard on Yerba Buena Island

With fewer uniformed members than the NYPD, the U.S. Coast Guard protects the entire nation and numerous overseas ports from maritime safety and security incidents. Coast Guard personnel save the lives of sailors in distress, keep channels marked for mariners, clean and analyze environments after toxic spills, prevent illegal drugs from reaching American soil, and check shipping containers for hazardous materials and contraband – all U.S. Coast Guard operations taking place right in your nautical backyard – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Since 1873, the Coast Guard has been on Yerba Buena Island.

From the base there today they monitor shipping traffic around the Bay, upriver and out to sea, and maintain navigation aids up and down the coast. Learn about the Coast Guard’s varied missions and their relationship with Yerba Buena Island and the Bay Area.

Speaker: Petty Officer Cree Townsend, USCG.
