Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff grew up in a rural village of India where food was at the center of life. In the late 70s, after completing her education in the US, she joined The Bay Area’s People’s Food System, a fair food distribution organization that created about a dozen health food stores. Shanta became a co-owner of Other Avenues, one of the stores that survived from that era, where she worked for over 35 years.
Shanta is the author of four books, Other Avenues are Possible: Legacy of the People’s Food System of the San Francisco Bay Area; The Ethnic Vegetarian Kitchen; Flavors of India; and Cooking Together, A Vegetarian Co-op Cookbook.
