Event Details

The Merola Opera Program and San Francisco Public Library brings you free film screenings of great operas with Merola Goes to the Movies.

Join in on Sunday, September 27th at 1 pm for a free film screening of Puccini’s legendary opera Madama Butterfly at the San Francisco Library Main Branch (100 Larkin Street) in the Koret Auditorium.

Considered one of the greatest operas ever written, Puccini’s classic tells the story of an arranged marriage between an American naval officer and a Japanese teenager and is full of passion and tragedy. Mirella Freni and Plácido Domingo headline a powerful cast in the KV Wiener Staatsopernchar’s production of this powerful opera. Performed in Italian with English subtitles.

Before the screening, a Merola representative will give a short talk about the opera. Guests are also welcome to enter a free drawing to win Merola Opera Program prizes.

The SF Public Main Branch is easily accessible by MUNI (19, 47, and 49 lines), MUNI Metro and BART (exit at Civic Center Station).
Doors for seating open at 12:30 pm. All seating is first come and not reserved in advance. Early arrival is suggested for best seats.

*As this is a free event, the Eventbrite registration is to let them know how many they can expect as seating is limited. You may still attend without registering. Signing up through Eventbrite does not guarantee you a seat.
