Free Range Fridays: Honky Tonk Live Music Night | Richmond Dist.

Free Range Fridays features live, acoustic music by some of the Bay Area’s finest Americana performers. The series is hosted by Jeanie and Chuck Poling, longtime contributors to the local folk/country/bluegrass scene. Free Range Fridays attracts many great artists who play for the sheer joy of sharing their music with a crowd that really appreciates it. Plus, they’ve had some awesome special guests show up – no promises, but rumor has it that past cameos include Jimmie Dale Gilmore (true) and Robert Plant (false, but we love how rumors we started get back to us as fact).

It’s not just a show, it’s a pocket festival that will pull heartstrings, induce belly laughter, and get that brain thinkin’ mighty powerful thoughts. All FRF shows are free and are part of their continuing effort to keep alive San Francisco’s tradition of coffeehouse entertainment. Shows are presented roughly every three months.

In January Free Range Friday features:

  • Quake City Jug Band
  • Jenny Kerr
  • Ismay
  • Matt Lax
  • and your hosts, Jeanie and Chuck

Performer Bios

Quake City Jugband has been on the FRF bandwagon since we started. They play an especially spirited brand of blues, novelty tunes, torch songs, and whatever the hell else they want to play. Because that’s the whole point of being a jug band, y’know.

Jenny Kerr is a longtime local favorite who kicks some Americana ass. This San Francisco native has performed all over the world and headlined before crowds of tens of thousands in Europe. So imagine our delight at having her at our li’l ole show. Jenny’s the total entertainment package – a skilled instrumentalist, soulful singer, outstanding songwriter, and dynamic performer.

Ismay is a musical project fronted by Avery Hellman, a young woman of considerable talents who is beginning to attract attention from thoughtful, knowledgeable influential figures in the local music scene – like us! Influenced by folk icons like Doc Watson and Hazel Dickens, Avery also lists Captain Beefheart as a source of inspiration. Wherever she gets her ideas from they work.

Matt Lax is another of our long-term Free Range friends who brings a wealth of experience and talent to our shows. Born into a very large, very musical clan, he was exposed to all kinds of sounds, so it’s no surprise that he’s played all kinds of music – including a longtime stint as guitarist for Afro-beat band Zulu Spear. Whether playing with his band, the Nearly Beloved, or as a solo artist, Matt delivers the goods with carefully crafted songs that will stick in your ear. He appears with Kaye Rodden with Ryan Lim at Free Range Fridays.
