Original Event Description:
Join us this Saturday, July 19th at 10 AM, for a powerful morning of remembrance as we mark the 81st Anniversary of the Port Chicago Disaster — part of @portchicagoweekend, presented by @portchicago50. 🇺🇸
In partnership with the National Park Service and Friends of Port Chicago National Memorial, we’ll pay tribute to the 320 men who tragically lost their lives in the largest stateside military disaster of WWII.
Celebrate the memory and honor the heroes of Port Chicago with a special live performance. As part of the National Park Service’s commemoration ceremony, Dee Dee Simon will perform David James Boyd’s all-new Port Chicago Tribute Song.
Each year, the Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial holds a commemoration event to honor the lives lost in the tragic explosion of July 17, 1944. This event serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made and the enduring impact on civil rights and military policies.
The commemoration includes a solemn memorial ceremony, featuring speeches from guest speakers who reflect on the historical significance of the disaster. Information tables from both the park and various partners provide additional context and educational materials, enriching attendees’ understanding of the events and their aftermath.
