Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

One of San Francisco’s most celebrated after-hours museum events returns for a fall season of 2018.

These nine Friday Nights feature free admission to the main-level galleries highlighted by a reinterpretation of contemporary art in their permanent collection and new acquisitions called Specters of Disruption. In addition, Friday Nights will offer reduced-price tickets of $14 to the exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions from 6–8:30 pm.

Through social-media moments and in-person dialogue, visitors can engage and commune with the art and with one another in a warm and welcoming setting. Enjoy specialty drinks and mocktails, coffees, teas, and snacks. Bring your friends. Strike a pose at the selfie wall. Listen to music. Make art. Activities take place from 6–8:30 pm.

November 15, 2013 | Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

Friday Nights Schedule | November 15, 2013

5:30 – 8:30 pm: Live Performances by Atelier Emmanuel and Gregangelo and Velocity Circus
Wilsey Court is the site of a high-fashion runway glittering with Bulgari images where guests pose with movie star lookalikes and strut down the catwalk, their images captured in classic Bulgari style. Dozens of lucky guests are welcomed into our styling chairs to have hair and makeup transformed in a matter of minutes by the master stylists of Atelier Emmanuel. At the evening’s climax, a fashion show of cutting-edge women’s wear, hosted by Brad Rosenstein, spotlights the designs of Nika Tang, Cindy Quach, and Feijing Song + Erica Kim, alumna of the Academy of Art University’s School of Fashion.

6 – 8:30 pm: Surface, by Artist-in-Residence Ana Teresa Fernandez – Kimball Education Gallery
Artist Ana Teresa Fernandez invites visitors to engage with Surface, which explores issues of identity, sensuality, and victimization through a series of installations. Using large-scale 3D text, these works will be crafted from colored animal skins and mirrors. The word “surface” derives from Middle French, which literally means “above face.” Fernandez will look at the current political and social climate and struggles with judgment and racism. She will investigate how borders and quantifiers have been applied to people due to their skin color, ethnic background, or sexual preference.

6 – 8:30 pm: Backstage at the Movies – Piazzoni Murals Room
Atelier Emmanuel hair and makeup stylists give the lucky winners of the chance and trivia games free style treatments to enhance their look and prepare them for the catwalk at the end of the evening. Plus, Smilebooth! will provide guests the opportunity to embrace the romance and glamour of the silver screen while taking Hollywood portraits, and share their celebrity shots on social media.

6:30 – 8:30 pm: Film Screening: The V.I.P.s – Koret Auditorium
Fog delays a group of travelers headed for New York. They wait at the VIP lounge of the London Heathrow Airport, each at a moment of crisis in his or her life. Starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Directed by Anthony Asquith, 1963, 119 minutes
