Event Details

Top Ten Social and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts’ Future Soul Think Tank present Future Soul 2015, an odyssey of dance reflected through music and film with two of Brooklyn’s favorites, DJ Spinna and DJ Center, playing side by side at YBCA this month.

Free, but an RSVP is required.

The two pair up in symphony with filmmaker Khalik Allah, projecting images of ordinary life at 125th and Lexington in Harlem, as well as his new film, Field Niggaz (2014).

The Futurists

  • DJ Spinna is something of an anomaly in music; a humbling example of what it takes to truly succeed within the framework of multiple fields. With a steadfast work ethic, an obsessively extensive vinyl library and the willingness to pursue the full extents of his roots (Funk, Soul R&B and Jazz), foundation (Hip-Hop) and future (Electronic/Dance music) without any restraints. Visit New York City any given month and find a number of Spinna themed throw-downs in the city’s esteemed venues – each as memorable as the last.
  • DJ Center soul-travels, navigating audiences with a crate of musical goods from around the globe, while echoing a New York state of mind. Center has rocked audiences from Los Angeles to Barcelona. A Center set is synonymous with the finest of selections whether he is doing Music Supervision for Gucci, recording radio sessions for Giant Step, or keeping NYC parties on their feet until the wee hours.
  • Khalik Allah is a self taught filmmaker and photographer, described as visceral, hauntingly beautiful, penetrative and profoundly personal. In 2010 Khalik’s father loaned him a fully manual, analogue film camera to take some casual photographs of his emcee friend, The Genius of The Wu- Tang Clan, and his casual interest quickly became serious. Photography and filmmaking are two overlapping circles that form a venn diagram in Khalik Allah’s mind; the area where they overlap is the space he inhabits as an artist.

The Future Soul Think Tank is a platform for a creative brain trust, designed to bring together the Bay Area’s most courageous thinkers, designers, entrepreneurs, community organizers, and artists into a collaborative cohort as part of YBCA’s Creative Ecosystem. The Future Soul Think Tank spent its first year working with the question,“What will soul look like in the year 2038?”
