Watch light and shadow come alive through the art of Javanese wayang kulit, a shadow-puppet performance where intricately carved figures dance and battle to the music of resonant bronze gongs and percussive metallophones, and epic dramas unfold across the illuminated screen.
Gamelan Sari Raras is the Central Javanese performing arts ensemble at UC Berkeley. Founded in 1988, it includes both advanced students and community members, often featuring guest artists from Indonesia. Ki Midiyanto, a renowned musician, teacher, and master dhalang (puppeteer) co-founded and has led the group for many years. Heri Purwanto re-joins Sari Raras for this concert as guest drummer. Sari Raras also features vocalist Heni Savitri, gamelan teacher at UC Davis, who is a highly sought-after soloist in both Java and throughout the US.
