Event Details

The Great Calculation Machine Exhibition | SF

Early calculators were unwieldy, noisy, smelly machines that required constant maintenance.

Local mechanical engineer Mark Glusker collects them and museum exhibit designer Maria Mortati explores them. They will be in residence at Southern Exposure to provide a series of lectures, interactive performances, workshops, and an exhibition focused on mechanical calculating machines.

Gallery Hours: Wednesday – Saturday, April 10 – 13, 2013, noon to 6pm daily, with extended evening hours during events.

Drawing & Dissection | The Great Calculation Machine Exhibition | SF

Join The Great Calculation Machine Drawing and Dissection Workshop accompanied by ambient music from Aero-Mic’d.

Workshop participants will dig into and take apart several dense, mechanical calculators. Drawing participants will craft images of magnified gears, collaborate on sketching the larger machinery, and make gesture drawings of running motors. Some artwork from the workshop will be folded into a larger exhibit in the gallery.
