Celebrate America’s birthday with music, fun, and hands-on discovery at Redwood Symphony’s Happy Rootin’ Tootin’ 250th Birthday America! family concert on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Cañada College Main Theater.
Designed for families, first-time concertgoers, and music lovers of all ages, this interactive event begins with a Tour of the Orchestra, where audience members can meet musicians from each instrumental section, learn how their instruments work, hear live demonstrations, and ask questions in an informal setting.
The musical adventure continues with a lively program celebrating America’s rich musical heritage featuring favorites by John Williams, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Richard Hayman, and John Philip Sousa.
The afternoon concludes with a memorable Grand Finale as every audience member receives a glow-stick baton, learns the basics of conducting from Music Director Eric Kujawsky, and 10 raffle winners are invited onstage to help conduct the orchestra in The Stars and Stripes Forever.
“This concert is about making classical music welcoming, exciting, and fun,” said Music Director Eric Kujawsky. “Whether you’re attending your first concert or your fiftieth, we want everyone to experience the excitement of live orchestral music.”
A Tour Through American Music
The concert features some of America’s most beloved orchestral works.
Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid brings the Old West vividly to life with familiar cowboy songs such as Git Along, Little Dogies and The Old Chisholm Trail, energetic rhythms, and colorful orchestration that audiences of all ages will enjoy.
John Williams’ uplifting Liberty Fanfare, commissioned to celebrate the centennial of the Statue of Liberty, captures the optimism and grandeur of the American spirit.
Leonard Bernstein’s spirited Danzón from Fancy Free, created in collaboration with legendary choreographer Jerome Robbins, combines infectious dance rhythms with Bernstein’s unmistakable energy and wit.
Richard Hayman’s audience favorite Pops Hoe-Down adds a lively, foot-stomping celebration of Americana.
