The goal of this event is to be intentional about educating our community on how gender inequality intersects with other identities (i.e. race, sexual orientation, religion, ability, etc.) and other forms of oppression. We aim to challenge sexist, homophobic, and transphobic attitudes and support equal rights, opportunities, and protections for all people. It is important for us to create a safe space and platform to listen to individuals with different identities and have conversations that will advance gender equity in Hip Hop. Our revolutionary panel discussion will take thoughtful action to discuss and offer solutions on the challenges of balancing Motherhood and artistry, specifically in Hip Hop.

Included in the event will be a women-led Women’s Empowerment Workshop that will also look at the historical context that Hip Hop was born from and its evolution, with an emphasis on women’s influences and experiences. We will challenge sexism in Hip Hop and its impact on all participants who create or consume the culture, dissecting its effect on their respective intersectional identities. Understanding Hip Hop’s origin as an act of resilience and rebellion against a culturally oppressive society, we will focus on the existence and impact of women in Hip Hop. We will look back in order to move forward, to see women as belonging, impactful, powerful, and an integral part of continuing the legacy of Hip Hop Culture.

This event will inspire and empower women to participate actively in the male dominated culture of Hip Hop. This can be actualized through education and women-led demonstrations of the artistic elements of Hip Hop and world-class performances. As students are introduced to women pioneers who have greatly impacted the culture, they will begin to develop an appreciation for women and feel inspired to follow in their footsteps. We aim to dismantle the hyper-sexualization and misogyny that has predominated the narrative in Hip Hop Culture and visualize a more inclusive, equitable, and empowering alternative. These objectives are not specifically aimed at girls and women, for it is just as important that boys and men recognize the many contributions women have made to Hip Hop.
