CANCELED – Hippie Hill’s “Spiritual Smoke-In” 50th Anniversary | Golden Gate Park

On Memorial Day, Monday May 28, 2018, at 3:00pm, a ceremony is planned at Golden Gate Park’s “Hippie Hill” to mark the 50th anniversary of the first spiritually-oriented public cannabis “smoke-in” in the United States.

The informal ceremony will honor both the use of the herb as a spiritual sacrament, and the historical activism that brought legal cannabis to California. It will feature silent meditation, sharing of testimony, a brief talk about the original 1968 event, and partaking of the sacrament at 4:20pm.

The original smoke-in was a response to then-President Lyndon B. Johnson’s call for a “National Day of Prayer” at 11:00am on Memorial Day 1968. That day, a group of hippies and activists, led by the Reverend Willie Minzey of the Shiva Fellowship, marched through the Haight-Ashbury to Golden Gate’s “Hippie Hill.” There, a crowd of 250 people gathered around an altar where the Reverend Minzey demonstrated the use of the herb as a holy offering dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The crowd meditated, shared cannabis, and watched Jefferson Poland recite “The Song of Solomon” in the nude, for which he was arrested.
