An iron-willed widow in Kosovo fights to provide for her family in this formidable tale of female empowerment and resilience, which in 2021 became the first film to sweep the Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Competition’s Grand Jury Prize, Audience Award, and Directing Award. The widow, whose husband has been missing for years after the Kosovo War, decides to start her own business to survive, but she must overcome her village’s patriarchal indifference—and eventual rage. Based on a remarkable true story, Hive is, for director Blerta Basholli, “dedicated to all the women who really need their voice to be heard, everywhere in the world.”
