Event Details

Amoeba Home Grown presents a free showcase featuring Amoeba Berkeley’s May and June Homegrown artists Mariee Sioux and Emily Jane White.

Amoeba Music’s Home Grown Independent Artist Program supports the independent spirit by highlighting independent music championed by its employees.

Gift for the End is the sophomore offering from Nevada City, California’s Mariee Sioux. Impressionistic narratives are underscored by thatchwork guitar patterns that showcase Mariee’s voice: an unadorned, naked instrument that rings clear and high above airy atmospherics and mellow percussion. Gift for the End is dream logic at play: a fluid procession of personal and natural imagery that moves from place to place and symbol to symbol, but ultimately never loses its cohesive dimensions or emotional shape.

There’s a rare confidence to Emily Jane White’s songwriting: it’s at once generous and tough-minded, reflective and unsentimental. White’s third album, Ode to Sentience, is her most realized work to date. Drawing upon finger-picked folk, traditional country, classical music, and rock, White creates an expansive space for her intuitive lyrics and elegiac vocals. The spare skeletons of the songs on Ode to Sentience are fleshed out with subdued electric guitar thrums, diaphanous organ, ethereal pedal steel guitar, lush strings, and White’s dusky alto with its signature catch.
