Event Details

Juli Gudehus is an artist based in Berlin. Comparing apples and oranges is her daily bread. She sees and establish connections between phenomena, people, and things. Language and everyday culture are rich sources for her various collections as well as for her work.

Her »Icon Spell« project is about creating a global visual language with as many people as possible. Clearly, communication using sequences of pictograms is an age-old idea. Now it’s back.

Realizing that living languages are not the work of individuals, but of many, Juli is inspired to invite as many different people as possible as co-creators. This calls for the most diverse nations, cultures, languages, sociotopes, generations and professions.

In this workshop, participants are asked to collect signs of their environments as intangible cultural heritage and to generate »visual vocabularies« and a »pictogrammar«. While the corresponding exchange means to facilitate mutual understanding, inclusion, and diversity, the »Icon spell« project also addresses experts from the fields of language, cultural studies, sociology, politics, image creation, and communication science. It aims to bring about diverse collaborations and transdisciplinary cooperation.
