The art of Japanese tattooing has come a long way from its origins in an insular, premodern Japan. Today, artists from across the globe practice this style, inking their clients with motifs made popular in the hedonistic “floating world” and transmitted across the centuries by bold, colorful woodblock prints, on view in the exhibition.

Join us in a conversation with the Bay Area’s most distinguished and world-renowned tattoo artists Don Ed Hardy, Junii Shimada of Diamond Tattoo and Mary Joy Scott of Tattoo City, as they discuss the captivating art of Japanese tattooing then and now. In conjunction with the special exhibition Tattoos in Japanese Prints. Taki Kitamura of State of Grace moderates the discussion.
