Free Kabuki Film Screenings | Japantown

Kabuki is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers.

The Japanese Cultural and Community Center present free screenings of Kabuki theater on film with English subtitles and explanation for those who are lost. All ages welcome.

If you are curious about why Kabuki’s unique combination of drama, music, dance, and spectacle continues to entertain millions every year, “here’s your chance to see one of the finest Kabuki films ever made, free, amongst fans and experts who will gladly fill you in on all the social and historical aspects of the performance” (Flavorpill “Editor’s Pick”).

The story tells of how the beloved folk hero Sukeroku and his partner Agemaki, the most beautiful courtesan in Edo’s Yoshiwara pleasure district, conspire to defeat the corrupt samurai Ikyu. The play features an all-star cast in one of Kabuki’s most famous and popular plays.
