Join KALW for a live taping of NOT BORN YESTERDAY, a podcast about the joys and challenges of getting older. Hosts Miriam Goodman and Lynn Winter Gross talk with experts in the field about the issues and opportunities of aging.
This live event will focus on something many adults are facing—the balancing act of building a career, having a life, raising children and also stepping in to care for aging parents.
For many adult children who find themselves in this role, it is rewarding, but it can also be exhausting, isolating, and even career-changing. And the parent-child relationship can change once the adult child is doing the caregiving.
Attendees will also have a chance to talk about their experiences and get some advice and support from experts and other people in similar situations.
GUESTS INCLUDE:
Shea English, a San Francisco-based wardrobe consultant who recently took care of her mother who had cancer. She shared caregiving with her sister.
Christina Irving, the Director of Client Services at Family Caregiver Alliance. She oversees the staff of the Bay Area Caregiver Resource Center who provide direct services to family caregivers, including assessment, counseling, education, and support. She received a Master’s degree in Social Work from San Jose State University and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Sophia Zamudio-Haas is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCSF. She is a social and behavioral scientist, who specializes in qualitative, and community engaged methods. Her research focuses on increasing access to HIV services for most affected groups, including transgender people, in partnership with community organizations and public health clinics in the US and globally.Sophia grew up in San Francisco and still lives about a mile from her parents. In the past few years, she has spent a lot of time caregiving for her parents, who have faced a number of health events and changing health conditions, including epilepsy, early memory loss, stroke, and lung cancer.

Not Born Yesterday is KALW’s first Podcast in Residence. Hosted Miriam Goodman and Lynn Winter Gross, the show is about the joys and challenges of aging, exploring the issues and opportunities of getting older with experts in the field.
Miriam and Lynn were roommates in college and have been friends for more than 60 years. They launched Not Born Yesterday in 2021 to tackle issues like adult children “divorcing” their parents, supporting friends and family with dementia, combating ageism, the potential and pitfalls of artificial intelligence for older adults — always with the goal of providing solutions and tips from experts in the field to older adults and their adult children. They recently released their 100th episode, an interview with Ben Fong-Torres.
They have been working with KALW since February to take their podcast to the next level and package and market it as a one-hour show for syndication on other public radio stations.
Your RSVP includes admission to Open Decks: Community Art in Motion, a collaborative art exhibition and cultural program featuring original art by 100 Bay Area artists on skateboard decks. Open Decks is on view from July 24 – September 19, 2025.
There is a $10 – $20 sliding scale suggested donation for this event. Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
