Event Details

The De Anza Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will feature a program by Jason Martinez of the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum on a plant hunting trip to the Sikkim Himalayas and West Bengal regions of India from May 12 through June 4, 2015 in search of rhododendron species which was led by Steve Hootman, the Executive Director and the Curator of the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden and the Rhododendron Species Foundation.

During the plant hunting expedition the participants were able to locate all but three species endemic to this part of the Himalayas. The trip included a 6 day Trek on the Dzongri Trail in West Sikkim, catching a view of the third highest mountain in the word, Mt Kangchenjunga; which was followed up by hiking on Joseph Dalton Hooker Trail in North Eastern Sikkim, and then heading south to Singalilia National Park in West Bengal on the border of Nepal.

To find out about rhododendrons from the Sikkim Himalayas and West Bengal regions of India, come to their meeting. There is no charge for admission and refreshments will be served. For further information see website.

The photo is of the Maddenii Series species R. dalhousiae which is native to eastern Nepal, India (Sikkim), Bhutan, China, and southeast Tibet.
