Event Details

Join us at San Francisco Center for the Book for a free screening of “Proceed and Be Bold,” a documentary about letterpress artist Amos Kennedy. Doors open at 6:00 with an opportunity to pull your own print off the Vandercook press. Movie starts at 7:00 pm. FREE

Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. is an internationally recognized printing press artist, though he would rather be referred to as a “humble negro printer.” He tossed aside his corporate 9-to-5 job at AT&T and chose to live in rural Alabama towns and go wherever his art takes him. Amos found his calling making chipboard posters that are socially, politically, and racially charged: with quotes from Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, and phrases like “coffee makes you black.”

This documentary film probes Kennedy, his friends, family and colleagues in an attempt to unravel the artist’s raison d’etre. The result is a discussion on the monetary and intrinsic values of art, the goals of an artist and the workings of race and culture.
