The over 18-foot tall bronze cast fountain was formally dedicated on September 9, 1875, and since then, has become an annual early morning remembrance meeting point for the April 18, 1906 earthquake and fire, and was voted as one of San Francisco’s most favorite monument in 2023. On September 9, 1875, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of California’s admission to the United States, mayor James Otis unveiled a new public fountain, a gift from entertainer Lotta Crabtree, at the intersection of Market and Kearny Street in downtown San Francisco. One hundred and fifty years later, Lotta’s Fountain still stands with Gold Rush scenes, sailing ships, and lion heads decorating its cast-iron sides and is recognized as both a city and nationally-designated landmark.
