The Museum of Craft and Design rolls out the red carpet and invites you to MAKE – The RugLife Edition! Guest curated by c2-curatorsquared, the exhibition unravels the rich history of the rug and explores the works of 14 international contemporary artists, each of whom uniquely approaches the medium.

Join us for an unforgettable night as we transform the galleries with hands-on, interactive activities inspired by RugLife, and feel the rhythm as Oakland-based DJ Black Panda spins some beats to set the vibe for the night.

It’s fiber o’clock somewhere. Grab a drink, explore the exhibition, craft to connect in the galleries, and dance with us!

THIS MONTH’S MAKE ACTIVATIONS

Pipe Cleaner Action Figures with Don Porcella

CCA Professor and artist Don Porcella works with pipe cleaners to create hand-held action figures with the artists in this class. Artists will use their hands to weave this wonderful craft material together while embracing their own unique identity. Working on a small scale lends itself to thinking about the essential elements of design and explores likeness through caricature.

No artistic skill is required to participate. The inclusive, open studio environment offers skill-building through sharing that creates new opportunities for growth and empathy. Don’t miss this opportunity to work directly with Porcella, a local artist whose fuzzy, twisted sculptures have been exhibited worldwide.

Rug Tufting Demo

Watch a rug tufting demo by designer and rug maker, Gina Moreno. Then try your hand with the tufting gun.

Tesselating Textures Block Printing

Block printing, historically used to decorate textiles for clothing, is a process steeped in tradition and generational craft knowledge. Carve your own design and transform your canvas through satisfyingly repetitive prints.

Wondrous Weaving

Archaeological evidence suggests weaving was universally known to all major human civilizations. Weaving remains a major method for textile production, both as an art form and in the commercial industry. Try your hand at this traditional, time-honored technique and take home a loom of your own!

Plushy Pom Poms

Pom poms and tassels are classic embellishments featured in woven rugs. Create a pom pom garland to bring a RugLife aesthetic into your own home or make a pom pom keychain and never lose your keys again!

Pictorial Perler Beads

Patterns and symbols are integral to the cultural history of rugs, often included to tell stories or bring good fortune. Ukrainian Kylym/Kilim rugs are flat-woven rugs denoted by their distinct style of bold geometric forms and bright colors. Pictorial Perler Beads mimics the gridded pattern of Kylym rugs and invites you to create your own symbolic artwork!
